When emotions appear in Movement practice

The connection between the body and emotions is a fascinating area that often goes unnoticed in our daily lives. The practice of movement, whether through yoga, dance or physical exercise, can become a powerful catalyst for unraveling the emotions stored in the depths of our being.

The Body as a Vehicle of Emotion

Bessel van der Kolk, in his book «The Body Keeps the Score», explores how traumatic experiences can be imprinted on the body, affecting the way we move and experience the world. The relationship between the body and emotions is intrinsic, and movement becomes a unique gateway to unravel these connections.

As we immerse ourselves in movement practice, we encounter a scenario where emotions can emerge in unexpected ways. Muscle tensions, body postures, and the way we breathe are subtle but powerful indicators of what is happening in our emotional world. Van der Kolk invites us to observe how the body can be a witness and narrator of our deepest emotional stories.

Yoga as a tool for emotional self-discovery

In the practice of yoga, we immerse ourselves in the exploration of the body and mind. Each posture, each transition, becomes an opportunity to explore the emotions that lie deep within. Mindfulness in movement allows us to observe how our body reacts, giving us clues about emotions that may be buried in our psyche. And many times giving us the opportunity to express or release retained emotions.

Mindfulness in movement is essential to this process of emotional self-discovery. By paying attention to how we move, we can unravel deep-rooted emotional patterns and allow for the release of what no longer serves.

Staying attentive to this emotional flow in the practice of Yoga can be very healing. Allowing ourselves to observe, release or embrace the emotions that arise can be a profound path of liberation.
